Pretty Pretty Fish

Pretty Pretty Fish are crafty one of a kind wall decorations made by hand from clay and foraged materials. The products are approximately the same size but very different in shapes and colors, and the height of the added ornaments on the fish differs. Therefore, the design of the packaging could not be a closed box with printed images on it. The fragility of the fish also had to be taken into consideration, and that the target group of customers are tourists in coastal towns in Slovenia and Croatia.

After extensive research, I determined the following important parameters and solutions for making suitable packaging:

Environmentally friendly and biodegradable: No adhesives or plastics. Packaging is produced by a local cardboard factory.

Minimalist and crafty design that does not overshadow the look of the fish: unprinted cardboard is used, and the fish are fixed in the packaging with cotton cord. The logo is designed in a crafty stamp representation and stamped on each box instead of being printed or affixed as a sticker.

The fish must not be harmed during transport: Keeping a safe distance from the extremes above and below reduces vibrations. A simple wrapping cardboard is provided for each fish, so sellers can wrap the products fast.

Each fish must be visible, and at the same time, its wrapping must not cause additional concern to sellers. The packaging must also be suitable for shelves in stores: From the front, through the window, each product is visible in its entirety. Time-consuming photography of individual products and printing on packaging is not required.

The packaging will be exposed a lot in the sun, so it is necessary to prevent the formation of a greenhouse and overheating of the product inside the packaging: The window and open sides allow airiness.

Economical use of material, without waste: the dimentions of the whole box and the wrapping combined are determined regarding the standard cardboard size used in the cardboard factory. the window cut-out is used on the back of the packaging for additional reinforcement and as a carrier for a wrapped leaflet with informative text.
