Stories of steljniki

The exhibition tells the story of steljniki in Bela Krajina (a region in southeastern Slovenia) which are overgrowing due to the abandonment of animal husbandry and bracken harvesting. These landscapes serve as important indicators of spatial changes over time, reflecting the interdependence between humans, animals, and bracken — a relationship established and maintained through cyclical work in extensive agriculture. At the same time, it emphasizes the diminishing presence of silver birches, once iconic symbols of the Bela Krajina landscape, which are becoming increasingly rare.
